A Department of Health spokesperson said:
"The adjustment referred to was a proper allocation provided from
centrally held funds and available for NHS spending. The transactions recorded
in the accounts of the NHS bodies concerned were in accordance with NHS
accounting rules and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. These accounts
were subject to independent external audit (as are all NHS organisations on an
annual basis) in 2000/01, and in the opinion of auditors represented a true and
fair view of the organisation's financial position."
