Letter To Sir James Cochrane

23 December 2002

Sir James Cochrane

Chairman

South West London Strategic Health Auth

41-47 Hartfield Road

London

SW19 3RG

Dear Sir James,

As I am sure you will be aware I have recently been dismissed as Director of Finance of St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, despite the fact that I had been employed continuously in the public sector for over thirty years, having spent the last sixteen of those years at St George’s, twelve of them as Director of Finance, with a completely unblemished disciplinary record.  Not only have I been dismissed for reasons which I consider unjustified, I was dismissed in breach of contract (I was not given notice) and expressly denied the right to any appeal.  Employment Tribunal proceedings have been commenced, and I am aware that you will have to bear that in mind when replying to me.  However, I would be interested to know whether the decision
to dismiss me without notice or appeal was made with your prior consent.  If not, then as Chairman of the Strategic Health Authority could you please confirm to me what authority the Chair of the Trust had to reach such a decision.  If she did not have the requisite authority (to deny me notice or appeal) then please confirm what action the Strategic Health Authority will be taking against her in this instance, to prevent other Chairs acting this way in the future.

Yours sincerely

Ian Perkin CPFA FRSA
